Description about the artwork below…
This most recent work by Peter Lewis echoes mixed sentiments in commemoration of the 100-year anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel and our history’s role in the Great War. One prominent scene depicts the droves of locals gathering on Kingsbridge Road in October 1914, as the ‘First 500’ marched from Pleasantville to board the SS Florizel for England. With their fearless allegiance, youthful abandon and exceptional valour, most would set sail to never return. What emerges in the painting are red poppies, symbolic of the close to 700 Newfoundland men who died (Veterans Affairs Canada) on that one fateful day on the 1st of July in 1916. Also in the painting, is a statue of the caribou, the emblem of the Regiment, and symbolic of the Memorial Site now standing in Beaumont Hamel. It is a tribute and a place of gathering for generations to come, to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom. Lastly there is a soaring dove in the painting, a symbol of hope, faith and peace.
This stirring painting reflects Peter’s heartfelt longing for a collective acknowledgement of our forefather’s service and sacrifice. Through his artwork a journey is interwoven, that not only depicts factual events from 100 year’s ago, but also conjures emotions of resilience, pride and hope
